The first commercial flight with passengers of a plane powered by biofuels will fly in April and it will be an Airbus A321 of the German airline Lufthansa and it will fly between Hamburg and Frankfurt.

The ships will be powered by a fuel that contains a mixture of 50 percent of hydrogenated vegetable oil, which has the characteristic that the CO2 emitted is absorbed by the biomass crops that are produced.

The flights will last for six months in a testing phase and to study the long-term sustainable use of biofuels in aviation.

In this project, Airbus offers technical assistance and it will control the fuel properties.

“We see huge opportunities to use biosynthetic kerosene. But first we want to learn from daily experience. Lufthansa is the first airline in the world to use biofuel on its flights, and this step is an important achievement in its strategy to accomplish a sustainable aviation “, said Lufthansa CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber.
